Metabolic Syndrome aka Syndrome X or Insulin Resistance Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome, syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome is defined as the presence of any three of the following:

  • Abdominal obesity.
  • High triglycerides.
  • Low LDL (“bad” cholesterol).
  • High blood pressure.
  • High fasting glucose levels.


The incidence of metabolic syndrome, syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome is more common in women versus men, and increases with age − affecting > 40% of people older than 60 years of age.  Weight is a major factor and occurs in 5% of normal weight, 22% of overweight and 60% of obese people.


The causes of metabolic syndrome include:

  • Abdominal obesity
  • Insulin resistance


The signs and symptoms associated with syndrome X includes:

  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure


Be aware the the following complications may arise:

  • Markedly increased risk for diabetes
  • Markedly increased risk for coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Associated with sleep apnea
  • Associated with fatty liver disease
  • Associated with chronic kidney disease or microalbuminuria
  • Associated with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)


The diagnostic assessment tools and tests used to diagnose metabolic syndrome, syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High fasting glucose
  • High triglycerides (TGs), high LDL ("bad" cholesterol) or low HDL ("good" cholesterol)
