Boswellia serrata (Frankincense)
Do you have sore joints?
Do you have many digestive symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal distension, diarrhea, nausea, blood and/or mucus in the stools, etc?
In practice, I have found Boswellia to be extremely beneficial for both of these conditions due to its great anti-inflammatory properties! Boswellia serrata is native to India, Northern Africa and the Middle East. Extracts of the gummy exudate found under the Boswellia bark is used in Ayurvedic medicine as an anti-arthritic, astringent, stimulant, expectorant and anti-septic.
Indications
Asthma
Boswellia demonstrates a significant improvement in both the symptoms of asthma and the objective measures of lung and immune function.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
Leukotrienes are hypothesized to play a role in the inflammatory process of UC. When compared to sulfasalazine (a common anti-inflammatory medication used for the treatment of UC), Boswellia extract showed similar or even better improvements in their UC symptoms and some patients even went into remission!
Crohn’s Disease (CD)
When compared to mesalazine in the treatment of acute Crohn’s disease, Boswellia produced similar significant decreases in CD symptoms.
Osteoarthritis (OA)
Patients who take Boswellia experience a significant decrease in pain and swelling, and an increase in the range of motion.
Cautions
Toxicity studies in rats and primates have not shown any pathological changes in hematological, biochemical or histological parameters at doses up to 1000 mg/kg. The LD50 is > 2 g/kg.
