Immune Support

Immune Support

Have you noticed that everyone was sick over the holidays?  It’s been a terrible cold/flu season this winter so far, so I just wanted to start off 2020 with a list of things you should try to remember to do in order to keep your immune system in tip top shape.

Eat Healthy

Aim to eat a whole foods diet filled with lots of fruits and vegetables.  The more colourful the options, the better!  Every colour of the rainbow provides a different combination of nutrients, so the more variety the better.

In addition, we now know that the bacteria that lives in our digestive system plays an important role in our immune system.  Providing your body with nutritious and clean food sources is a great start.

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise is important to maintain general good health by controlling body weight, protecting against various diseases and improves heart health by lowering blood pressure.  It also boosts your mood and promotes better circulation and gets the blood pumping, which allows your immune cells to circulate better and more efficiently.

Whether it’s hitting the gym, the dance floor or the basketball court, find something (or somethings) that you LOVE to do, along with a group of people to do it with, and you’ll find that instead of dreading exercising, you’ll be looking forward to it!

Sleep is KEY

We’ve all been told that it’s important to get enough sleep at night.  But did you know that research supports that if you don’t get enough sleep, you’re more likely to get sick and also impacts how quickly you can recover from getting sick?  It turns our mom did know best!

Your body produces a bunch of immune cells when you sleep.  When you’re sick (or stressed out as well!), your body requires more of these cells to help it fight off the infection, but it isn’t able to get what it needs when you don’t get enough sleep

Stress is NOT Helpful

When you’re stressed out, it produces certain hormones that actually decrease the effectiveness of your immune system, which decreases your body’s ability to fight off an infection.

Stress management is key!  Exercise.  Breathe.  Take some time out to yourself.  Have a “me day”.  Take a holiday or a staycation.  Go out for a girls night dinner.  Go out and do whatever it is that makes you re-balance.

Wash Your Hands!

And most importantly, always wash your hands thoroughly.  I always tell my family AND my patients that they should wash their hands whenever they get home or back into their office.  Make it a routine as the first thing that you do once you get back in from “outside”.

Also, don’t forget to regularly clean your phone as well!
