Purple Smoothie
For those of you who have read my blog over the years, you’ll know all about my love for smoothies. You’ll also know that I had a little boy (A) last year, and this purple smoothie post is all because of him.
He’s currently obsessed with blueberries and bananas. He’s also becoming more opinionated on what foods he’ll eat and which ones he wants to toss at Zoe (our dog) instead — Zoe LOVES this but I’m not a big fan!
I’ve discovered lately that A also shares my love for smoothies. And when it’s hot out, he will drink whatever smoothie I put into his sippy cup — no questions asked. It’s a mother’s dream!
Health Benefits for Endometriosis
Blueberries contain antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties, along with magnesium, all of which help to decrease inflammation that causes pain and worsens endo, and helps to eliminate the bloating. Blueberries are also high in fibre, which helps to regulate your bowel movements and promotes more balanced hormones.
Bananas contain significant amounts of magnesium, which helps to relax muscles (don’t forget that the uterus is a muscle!). They also contain lots of vitamin B6 to help balance hormones and quercetin to effectively decreases inflammation.
Almonds also work towards reducing inflammation because they contain omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain lots of vitamin E which is an antioxidant and regulates sex hormones.
Health Benefits for Fertility
Blueberries contain antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties that help to promote male and female fertility. They also contain lots of fibre that helps to regulate your bowel movements to promote more balanced hormones and also help maintain a healthy weight, which increases your chances of conceiving.
Bananas contain lots of vitamin B6, which helps to improve the quality of sperm and eggs, and regulate hormones.
Almonds contain lots of vitamin E, which is a potent antioxidant that improves sperm quality and motility, regulates the production of cervical mucus, and help to regulate sex hormones in both men and women.
Coconut water potentially helps to maintain a pH that improves vaginal health, which is very important when it comes to fertility.
Here’s the Recipe!
I’m terrible at using measurements when I cook — a trait I inherited from my grandfather — so play around with my suggested “measurements” and see what you prefer.
Ingredients
2 large handfuls of frozen blueberries
1 handful of frozen strawberries
Half of a banana
A small spoonful of almond butter
1-2 medium to large scoop of coconut yogurt
A good amount of coconut water — enough to allow the blender to blend easily
** You can add a larger spoonful of nut butter or a scoop protein powder if you want to use this as a meal replacement.
** You can also swap out whatever ingredient with something else that you suits your tastebuds more
** And you can in some ice cubes if you want your smoothie SUPER icy in texture
Directions
Toss all of the ingredients into a high speed blend, blend thoroughly and enjoy!
