Meyer’s Cocktail: What is it and will it benefit me?
At Insight Naturopathic Clinic (in midtown Toronto at Bayview and Eglinton), intravenous therapy is commonly used in treating many of our oncology and chronic disease patients. However, intravenous therapy doesn’t necessarily equate to high dose vitamin C therapy. In fact, a Myers Cocktail is a great example and I administer them regularly at Adelaide Health Clinic (in downtown Toronto at First Canadian Place at Bay and Adelaide).
The Myers Cocktail is an intravenous nutritional treatment that was named after Dr. John Myers MD, a physician from Baltimore, Maryland.
What’s In It?
It consists of a variety of vitamins and minerals, with the specific combination and dosages individually catered for each patient. In general, the Myers Cocktail contains: B complex, vitamin B5 (dexpanthenol), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B12 (hydroxycobalamin or methylcobalamin), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), calcium and magnesium. These are diluted in 0.9% sodium chloride (saline) either in a 100 mL bag to be slowly dripped intravenously or in a syringe to be slowly pushed intravenously.
What’s It For?
The Myers Cocktail has been found to be beneficial for a variety of different conditions, including:
Fatigue
B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12, are extremely beneficial for a an energy boost. Interestingly, chronic fatigue syndrome has been linked to magnesium deficiency.
Fibromyalgia
It has been found that fibromyalgia patients may have sufficient serum levels but insufficient intracellular levels of magnesium. There is evidence that patients with chronic muscular complaints such as myofascial pain, relapsing soft tissue injuries and fibromyagla benefited from intravenous magnesium alone or in combination with B vitamins, vitamin C and calcium.
Headaches
Intravenous magnesium has a particularly beneficial effect on migraines and tension headaches. This may be due to its ability to vasodilate the blood vessels and relax the muscles.
Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTIs)
Many patients who receive a Myers Cocktail report a shortened duration of their illness. This is most likely due to the contribution of vitamin C.
